Volunteers are essential members of the West Midlands Police (WMP) family, offering invaluable support across many of our teams and departments, from the dog unit to forensics. Whether it's one day a week or on a more casual basis, our volunteer program is incredibly flexible and welcomes contributions of all kinds. We deeply appreciate every individual who donates their time to help us provide the highest level of service to our community.
Our Police Support Volunteer (PSV) program provides a unique opportunity for community members to become "citizens in policing." As a PSV, you'll bring your skills and knowledge to our police teams, helping build stronger, more effective relationships with local communities. PSVs enhance our capacity to deliver on our mission to prevent crime and protect those in need, and they are key advocates of the WMP values.
Volunteers also receive training, guidance, and advice to carry out their roles effectively. By working alongside our officers, you will bring fresh ideas, raise local concerns, suggest solutions, and build connections with your neighborhood.
Every department offers distinct roles suited to various interests and expertise. Here are some key volunteer roles at WMP:
Cadet Leaders: Guide young cadets, often from vulnerable backgrounds, by providing mentorship and encouragement to become active, responsible citizens. Apply to become a Cadet Leader
Puppy Walkers: Support our dog unit by socializing and training puppies from 6-8 weeks old until they're ready for formal training at 12-16 months.
Special Constables: Work alongside officers and Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) in tasks like responding to 999 calls, local patrols, road safety, and public events. Special Constables, while volunteers, hold the same powers as police officers. Apply to become a Special Constable
Chaplaincy Support: Provide emotional support and friendship to our staff as part of the Force Chaplaincy.
Volunteers are essential in various specialized departments, including economic crime, public protection, and forensics. There are also roles supporting our neighborhood teams, working in our police museum, or participating in programs like Neighbourhood Watch and Street Watch.
Volunteering with WMP is more than a role—it’s an opportunity to give back to your community, make new connections, and develop skills. We are always recruiting volunteers to join our WMP family and continually create new and exciting volunteer opportunities.
