A man’s been jailed for 17 years over a knife attack in Handsworth, which left a man with serious injuries.
We were called to Gibson Road in the early hours of 26 July last year, after ambulance colleagues reported a man in his 20s had been stabbed.
He was taken to hospital with injuries so serious they were initially deemed life-threatening.
Our Major Crime Unit (MCU) began immediate enquiries, speaking to witnesses and residents in the area, and reviewing CCTV in a bid to track down the person responsible.
Quick-time enquiries led detectives to identify Mohamed Mahamad as a suspect, and he was arrested less than 24 hours after the attack took place.
Our officers were able to establish that this was an attempted robbery, and Mahamad had punched, kicked, and stabbed the man – trying to take his phone and bag.
After the attack, he calmly walked away empty handed, leaving his victim seriously injured in the street.
Following a thorough investigation, Mahamad, aged 37 and of Browns Green, Birmingham, was charged with attempted murder, attempted robbery, and possession of a knife.
In January he was found guilty of wounding, attempted robbery, and possession of a bladed article.

On Monday (8 June), Mahamad was jailed for 17 years in total.
Det Sgt Jeanette Roberts, from MCU, said: “Throughout the investigation, our thoughts have remained with the man who was hurt – as he continues to recover from his very serious injuries.
“There is no doubt that due to the callous and sustained attack at the hands of Mahamad, he could well have lost his life.
“We know that people who were there helped bring the assault to an end – and they should be commended for this, as without their intervention the circumstances could again have been even worse.
“Our team worked hard and at pace to identify the attacker and get him before the courts, and we welcome the prison sentence handed down to him.
“We remain completely committed to reducing knife crime and bringing offenders like him to justice.”
Our work to tackle knife crime continues across the West Midlands, and we’re working hard with our partners to prevent violence before it happens, take weapons off the streets, and arrest offenders involved in violent crime.
