We’ve seized more than 50 illegal e-bikes which were being ridden in Birmingham city centre since we launched a crackdown on the dangerous machines last summer. Officers have been spotting and intercepting the bikes, checking if they have been modified to enable them to go faster than the law allows, and then sending them away to be crushed. The riders face a walk home – and are dealt with for traffic offences. We launched our operation last summer in response to concern from pedestrians and business. People were worried that the bikes, which are quiet, would be involved in a serious collision, while they also pose a greater risk to vulnerable pedestrians and those who are sight impaired.
This afternoon we have arrested a woman from London on suspicion of inciting racial hatred, as part of our policing response to a planned gathering in Birmingham.
