FOI Request Reference: 619/26
Thank you for your request for information, received 6/3/2026
Request
For the period 2022 to 2025 full calendar years please provide:
Q1: All recorded knife crime offences in the West Midlands area – please state the offence titles (for clarification: I mean all knife crime offences that fall under crimes with physical harm of some sort, those being murder, manslaughter, rape (all), and robbery. 'Other sexual offences' refers to all non-rape sex crimes (e.g. 'sexual assault on a male/female under XX'), while with 'violence with injury' I'm referring to Section 47 ('actual bodily harm') and the more severe Section 18/20 ('grievous bodily harm'
For each offence, please include the following fields (or the closest equivalent held on your records management system):
1. Please provide month / year offence committed
The above is the final after clarification that we received from you on 6th March 2026.
Response
Please find enclosed our response.
It is important to know how we have searched for your data.
Knife Crime offences pertain to specific offences that involve possession of a knife such as the [Offence Class] 'possession of weapons'.
Instead, to satisfy your intention to receive records for offences where a knife is involved causing harm, the following criteria has been used.
[Weapon Usage] = 'Other Use', 'Used as a blunt instrument', 'Used as a threat', 'Used causing injury', 'Used causing no injury or damage', 'Used causing property damage only'
These [Weapon Usage] categories encompass all categories in this field with the exception of 'believed but not seen' and 'carried but not used'.
All of the relevant [Weapon Usage] categories above have been included with intention to provide records for offences where a knife was used. The provided data will cover all available records as the original request was obfuscated when it comes to targeting specific offences or offence categories.
In accordance with the agreed 'knife crime' criteria that informs which weapons are considered 'knives' for the purpose of answering FOI requests the following [Weapon Type Groups] & [Weapon Descriptions] have been used.
[Weapon Type Group] = 'Knife', 'Other projectile weapon', 'Other sharp/bladed weapon'
[Weapon Description] = 'Axe', 'Broken Bottle or Glass', 'Combat Knife', 'Craft Knife', 'Cross Bow', 'Dagger', 'Flick Knife', 'Kitchen Knife', 'Knife - Unknown', 'Lock Knife', 'Machete', 'Meat Cleaver', 'Pen Knife', 'Razor Blade', 'Scissors', 'Screwdriver', 'Sharp Instrument', 'Sword', 'Zombie Knife'.

Every effort is made to ensure that the figures presented are accurate and complete. However, it is important to note that this data has been extracted from a number of data sources used by forces for police purposes. The detail collected to respond specifically to your request may be subject to the inaccuracies inherent in any large-scale recording system. Consequently, care should be taken to ensure data collection processes and their inevitable limitations are considered when interpreting the data.
The figures provided therefore are our best interpretation of data which has relevance to your request, but you should be aware that the collation of figures for ad hoc requests may have limitations and this should be considered when those data are used.
If you decide to write an article / use the enclosed data we would ask you to take into consideration the factors highlighted in this document so as to not mislead members of the public or official bodies or misrepresent the relevance of the whole or any part of this disclosed material.
An abundance of funding and dedicated resources continue to be ploughed into reducing knife crime which remains a top priority for WMP. For many years WMP has seen some of the highest knife crime offences per 1,000 population. That has now changed, we no longer occupy that unenviable position as we continue to see sustained reductions. That’s down to some very intense work with our local partners and the support of the public.
The latest statistics serve to evidence the improvements people are seeing in their community. While recognising that any offence is one too many, people in the West Midlands are statistically now less likely to be a victim of crime.
It's essential that we all come together — police, schools, teachers, and parents — to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our young people.
